Where Does Anytype Store Vault Data?
Anytype keeps the vault in a user chosen storage folder. The default spots and how moving one works.
Last updated
Anytype stores each vault in a storage folder you pick at creation, holding encrypted blocks, uploaded files in flatfs fragments, and search indexes. The default is an OS standard spot, changeable with the gear icon on the welcome screen to any drive or encrypted volume.
Moving means logging out, picking the new Vault Data Location on the login screen, and re authenticating; Anytype redownloads the vault there. The old folder is not auto deleted, so verify then remove it by hand. In local only mode that folder is the sole copy, so back it up like an original.
Where Anytype stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\anytype
Default work dir; vault storage folder itself is user chosen at setup. Program files sit separately under Local\Programs\anytype. Mount external drives before login when vaulting there.
~/Library/Application Support/anytype
Default work dir with the same user chosen vault folder pattern. FileVault composes fine underneath since vault data is already encrypted at rest.
~/.config/anytype
Work directory default on Linux. Vault folder chosen at creation. LUKS or VeraCrypt mounts must be up before launch or the vault reads as missing.
Frequently asked questions
how do i move my anytype vault
Log out, click the gear on the login screen, choose the new Vault Data Location, and log back in. Anytype redownloads everything there. Confirm the new vault opens, then delete the old folder manually.
can i read anytype files outside the app
No. Files sit as encrypted fragments inside the vault folder. Export objects from inside Anytype instead. The folder backup strategy is copy the whole vault dir, never single blobs.
