Where Do AppImage Files Go on Linux?

Common AppImage storage folders, desktop integration entries and icon locations on Linux.

Last updated

AppImage has no registry and no required install folder. ~/Applications is a convention that tools like AppImageLauncher default to, not a rule the format enforces. Many people use ~/.local/bin or keep files in Downloads.

Desktop menus work through .desktop files. Integration tools write one per AppImage into ~/.local/share/applications. That entry points at the real file location, so moving the AppImage without updating it breaks the menu shortcut.

Where AppImage stores this, by platform

Linux
~/Applications/[Name].AppImage

Convention rather than a required path. Alternatives include ~/.local/bin, ~/bin, ~/Downloads and /opt for shared machines. Desktop entries land in ~/.local/share/applications, icons in ~/.local/share/icons. The old appimaged daemon is deprecated, so expect no config for it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install an AppImage properly?

Move the file to ~/Applications and make sure it is marked executable. AppImageLauncher offers this move automatically. Manual setups just need the executable bit set with chmod.

How do I fully remove an AppImage?

Remove the .AppImage file and delete its .desktop entry from ~/.local/share/applications. Icons may linger in ~/.local/share/icons, so check there too. No package manager step is needed.
