Where Does ArcGIS Pro Store Projects and Settings?

Where ArcGIS Pro keeps projects, templates and user settings on Windows, and how to reset the interface.

Last updated

ArcGIS Pro centers on project folders under Documents. Each project gets its own directory with the aprx file, a default geodatabase and a toolbox. Templates, packages and portal downloads sit as siblings under the same ArcGIS root.

Interface preferences live far away in a versioned user.config file under Roaming. That split means wiping settings never risks project data. Rename the config to reset the UI while projects stay exactly where they were. Favorites and recent lists rebuild on next launch, so only custom ribbons need rework.

Where ArcGIS Pro stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\ArcGIS\Projects

Default home for new projects with aprx, geodatabase and toolbox inside per project. Portal downloads, templates and packages sit as siblings. Interface prefs live separately in Roaming ESRI user.config.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset the ArcGIS Pro interface to defaults?

Close Pro, then rename user.config inside the versioned StrongName folder under Roaming ESRI. Pro rebuilds defaults on next launch. Project files stay untouched since they live separately under Documents ArcGIS.

How do I change the default ArcGIS Pro project folder?

Open Project, Options, General, and set the project location field. New projects land there with their home folder, geodatabase and toolbox. Admins can lock a default through the settings config file.
