Where Does IVPN Store Settings and Manual Configs?

IVPN app settings stay in app storage, while manual OpenVPN and WireGuard files live where you save them.

Last updated

The IVPN app manages its own login and preferences internally. There is no single config file you need to touch for normal use. Manual setups are the exception, and those files are yours to place.

Download .ovpn or WireGuard .conf files from the IVPN account area. On Windows, OpenVPN GUI reads C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config. On Linux, wg-quick expects /etc/wireguard/*.conf with strict permissions. Keep private keys out of shared folders.

Where IVPN stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config (manual .ovpn files)

Only for manual OpenVPN GUI use. Save account ID helper files beside the .ovpn if you use auth-user-pass. The IVPN app itself needs no manual files.

macOS
User chosen folder for .ovpn and .conf files

Import manual files into Tunnelblick or the WireGuard app. The IVPN native app keeps its own storage. Keep downloaded configs in one folder for easy cleanup.

Linux
/etc/wireguard (manual .conf files)

Root owned, chmod 600 per IVPN docs. Bring tunnels up with wg-quick. Generate keys locally and register only the public key in the account area.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get IVPN manual config files?

From the IVPN account area config generators for OpenVPN and WireGuard. Download the zip, extract it, and import into your VPN client. Regenerate if a key leaks.

How do I back up an IVPN manual setup?

Copy the .ovpn or .conf files plus a note of which server each belongs to. Never share the private key section. On Linux also note file permissions so restores keep 600.
