Where Are Brotato Save Files Located?

Brotato's Roaming save folder with Steam ID layer and the editable save_v2 file.

Last updated

Brotato is a Godot game, so it saves under Roaming rather than LocalLow like Unity titles do. Inside the Brotato folder sits a numeric Steam ID directory with save_v2.json holding unlocks, stats and settings in one editable file.

Steam Cloud syncs the same tree, which causes the classic overwrite when a fresh Deck install beats an old PC to the cloud. Losing that race wipes unlocks, so disable Cloud before first launch on a new device.

Where Brotato stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Brotato\[SteamID]

save_v2.json inside the ID folder. Older builds used save.json. The file mixes progress with settings, so note graphics prefs before swapping in a downloaded save.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit Brotato unlocks by hand?

Yes. save_v2.json is plain JSON, so character lists and stats edit in any text editor. Back it up first and pick local over cloud if Steam asks on next launch.

Steam Deck wiped my PC unlocks. Why?

A fresh Deck save uploaded before the PC synced, and Cloud kept the newer empty file. Restore the PC copy with Cloud off, launch once, then re-enable Cloud.
