Where Are Dropbox Files Stored Locally?

Where the Dropbox folder lives on Windows, Mac and Linux, how to find the real path after a move, and what online-only files are.

Last updated

Dropbox does not bury your files in a cache folder. The desktop app syncs them into an ordinary folder you can open, search and back up like any other, and that folder is the only local copy that matters.

Two things trip people up. The folder can be moved during setup or later, so the default path may not be the one on your computer, and files marked online-only are placeholders: they show a filename and take up almost no space until you open one. The app's own Preferences panel shows the real path in a single click.

Where Dropbox stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Dropbox

This is the default, created during setup. If you moved it, the Preferences panel shows the current Dropbox folder location under the Sync tab (some builds call it General), and you can copy the path from there instead of trusting the default.

macOS
~/Dropbox

This is the classic default. Dropbox on the current macOS build uses File Provider instead, which puts the folder at ~/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox. The same Preferences > Sync page tells you which one you have.

Linux
~/Dropbox

Default location for the official Linux build. Move it from the tray icon > Preferences > Sync > Move Dropbox, and that panel also shows the current path if you already moved it.

Android
No user-visible folder

Files marked Available offline live in the app's private storage. Since a 2021 update other apps cannot browse them, so open the Dropbox app and go to your account > Manage offline files to see what is kept.

iOS
No user-visible folder

iOS sandboxes the app, and offline copies stay inside it. Anything you export lands in the Files app or the Photos app depending on the option you pick, and there is no Dropbox folder to browse.

Frequently asked questions

where is my dropbox folder

On Windows it is C:\Users\<name>\Dropbox, and on macOS and Linux it is ~/Dropbox, unless you moved it. The Dropbox icon > Preferences > Sync page always shows the current path, and you can copy it from there.

why are my dropbox files showing as online-only

Those entries are placeholders, not real files. Dropbox downloads one the moment you open it, so you need a connection and enough free space. Right-click the file and choose Make available offline to keep a local copy.

can i move my dropbox folder to another drive

On Windows and Linux, yes: Preferences > Sync > Move, then pick a new parent folder and let Dropbox move the contents. On the current macOS build the option is gone for most accounts, apart from moving to an external drive.
