Where Does Filen Store Synced Files?
Filen syncs folders you pick yourself, so the local path is your choice. Manage pairs in the desktop client's Syncs tab and mind the local trash folder.
Last updated
Filen has no fixed sync folder, which confuses people arriving from Dropbox-style tools. During setup you choose each local directory and pair it with a cloud path. Those choices are the location. The desktop client's Syncs tab lists every pair, so that tab is the map when you forget what you linked.
Two details catch people out. Filen drops a local trash folder inside each linked directory to shelter files deleted from the cloud side. And the newer Mounts tab offers a virtual drive instead of syncing, which keeps nothing local at all.
Where Filen stores this, by platform
[Your chosen sync folder]
Whatever folder you selected when creating the sync pair. Check the Syncs tab for the authoritative list. A local trash folder sits inside it by default; toggle it per pair in the sync settings.
[Your chosen sync folder]
Same user-chosen arrangement as Windows. The Mounts tab alternative (a virtual drive at a mount point you pick) suits machines where you would rather browse the cloud than mirror it.
[Your chosen sync folder]
Same deal on Linux, plus the CLI reads pairs from syncPairs.json in its data directory when you script syncs. Quote Windows-style backslashes carefully in that JSON if you share pair files across OSes.
Frequently asked questions
I forgot which local folders I linked. Where do I check?
Open the desktop client and look at the Syncs tab in the sidebar. Every pair lists its local and cloud folders, which is the reliable record. The folders themselves carry no marker beyond the trash folder Filen adds.
Can I recover a file Filen removed locally?
Yes, selectively. Deleted-in-cloud files land in a local trash folder inside the linked directory instead of vanishing. Disable it per sync pair if that extra folder annoys you, and exclude dot files the same way.
