Where Does Glance Store Its Config?
Glance reads a single glance.yml file for pages, widgets, and themes. Docker mounts it from a config folder you create.
Last updated
Glance keeps everything in YAML. The main file is glance.yml, which defines pages, columns, widgets, themes, and the server block. Docker setups mount a host folder to /app/config inside the container, so glance.yml lives at ./config/glance.yml on your host next to home.yml, .env, and custom CSS.
Binary installs work the same way without containers. Glance looks for glance.yml in its own directory unless you pass --config with another path. A common server layout puts the binary in /opt/glance and the config at /etc/glance.yml behind a systemd unit. Either way, one file (plus its includes) is the entire dashboard definition.
Where Glance stores this, by platform
/app/config/glance.yml (Docker volume)
Main dashboard definition: pages, widgets, theme, server block. Optional home.yml, .env, and assets/user.css sit beside it. Validate edits with glance config:print before restarting.
glance.yml (next to glance.exe)
Same file, no container. Place glance.yml next to the extracted executable and run it, then open http://localhost:8080. Use the --config flag if you prefer to keep the file elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up my glance dashboard
Back up the config folder (glance.yml, home.yml, .env, assets). That folder is the whole dashboard. Point the fresh container at the same /app/config mount and everything returns.
is this the same glance as openstack glance
Separate products that share a name. The dashboard reads glance.yml from /app/config. The OpenStack image service reads glance-api.conf from /etc/glance. Guides for one never apply to the other.
