Where Does Proton VPN Store Logs and Settings?

Proton VPN's log and settings folders on Windows and Linux plus manual config paths.

Last updated

Proton VPN splits diagnostics from settings. The Windows GUI writes app logs to local AppData while the background service logs to ProgramData, which is why support sometimes asks for both.

On Linux the GTK app follows XDG with settings under config and logs under cache. Manual WireGuard and OpenVPN profiles you download are separate files you place yourself, usually under Downloads first.

Where Proton VPN stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ProtonVPN\Logs

GUI app logs. Service logs separately at %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\ProtonVPN\Logs and updater logs under UpdaterLogs. Install root defaults to C:\Program Files\Proton\VPN.

Linux
~/.config/Proton/VPN

User settings. Logs at ~/.cache/Proton/VPN/logs. Manual WireGuard files you download go to /etc/wireguard/ when using wg-quick.

Frequently asked questions

Which Proton VPN logs do support need on Windows?

Both trees: the GUI logs in LocalAppData and the service logs in ProgramData. The service side covers firewall, split tunnel and OpenVPN driver events the GUI never sees.

Where do manual OpenVPN configs go on Linux?

Wherever your client expects them. Downloaded .ovpn bundles start in ~/Downloads. Move the chosen file into your NetworkManager or /etc/openvpn location after.
