Where Does Kdenlive Store Config and Cache?

Kdenlive settings file, autosaves and proxy cache on every OS, with projects living wherever you save them.

Last updated

Kdenlive settings live in kdenliverc: ~/.config on Linux, %LOCALAPPDATA% on Windows, ~/Library/Preferences on Mac. Deleting it and restarting restores factory defaults, layouts included.

Projects are yours alone: .kdenlive files (plus .bak) wherever you saved them, with proxy/, thumbs/ and .backup/ subfolders in the project dir. Autosaves and caches also default per OS (~/.cache/kdenlive, %LOCALAPPDATA%\kdenlive, ~/Library/Caches/kdenlive) but every one is movable in Settings, so treat defaults as starting points.

Where Kdenlive stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/kdenliverc

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\kdenliverc

Main settings; layouts in %LOCALAPPDATA%\kdenlive-layoutsrc. App backups in %APPDATA%\kdenlive\.backup; cache in %LOCALAPPDATA%\kdenlive. Projects are user chosen.

macOS
~/Library/Preferences/kdenliverc

Main settings (reach via Finder Go to Folder). App backups in ~/Library/Application Support/kdenlive/.backup; cache in ~/Library/Caches/kdenlive. Projects are user chosen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset Kdenlive to factory settings?

Close Kdenlive, delete kdenliverc from the path above, and restart. Custom layouts in kdenlive-layoutsrc go too if you remove that file as well.

Where are Kdenlive autosaves?

In .backup/ inside your project folder (current versions) plus the app backup dir per OS. Check Project Settings for the active path, since all of these are configurable and stale guides cite old locations.
