Where Does Zalo Store Chat Data?

Zalo's ZaloData folder with encrypted SQLite plus the in-app backup that actually moves.

Last updated

Zalo Desktop keeps full history locally in encrypted SQLite under a ZaloData folder, which the server can never resend since it only delivers undelivered messages. That makes local files the only complete record.

For moves, prefer the built-in Backup and Restore over raw copies. It writes a portable WinRAR archive to a directory you choose, and restore merges by same account only.

Where Zalo stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\ZaloData

Encrypted per account SQLite plus ZaloPC media and Received Files trees. Third party movers exist because C: bloat is the number one complaint. Back up via gear icon > Backup/Restore > Backup data.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/ZaloData

Same role. Default portable backup lands as .zip on Desktop; Change relocates it. Restore requires the same account or it refuses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read Zalo's local database directly?

Only with SQLCipher tooling and effort, since it is encrypted. The supported route is in-app backup to archive, or community export tools for transcripts.

Where do Zalo downloads go?

To Zalo Received Files, relocatable under Settings > Messages. The mover scripts relocate Zalo, ZaloData, ZaloPC and Received Files as a set.
