Where Does Olive Save Projects and Settings?

Olive saves .ove project files where you choose, with app preferences beside the install or home folder.

Last updated

Olive is still alpha, so project files matter more than settings. Save writes a .ove file to the folder you pick. Media stays where it was imported from, linked by path. Keep footage, project, and exports in one folder per video.

Preferences follow normal Qt locations and shift between 0.1 and 0.2 nightly builds. Exact config paths vary, so check the app data folders on your OS if you must migrate shortcuts. Back up the .ove plus media first.

Where Olive stores this, by platform

Windows
Documents (user chosen .ove projects)

Portable nightly zips keep config near the exe. Installed builds use AppData. Media links break if footage moves, so keep one folder per project.

macOS
~/Documents (user chosen .ove projects)

Same manual save model. 0.1 projects do not open in 0.2 builds. Finish or export old timelines before switching branches.

Linux
User chosen folder for .ove projects

AppImage and repo builds share home relative config. Disk cache for previews can grow large, so point cache at a roomy drive in preferences.

Frequently asked questions

What do I back up for an Olive project?

The .ove file plus every media file it links to, in stable paths. Exports are outputs, not backups. Zip the project folder before upgrading nightly builds.

Can Olive 0.2 open 0.1 projects?

No. The rewrite broke that format. Keep a 0.1 binary around for old work or export finished cuts first. New projects should start on the branch you plan to finish with.
