Where Does SAGA GIS Store Tools and Projects?

Where SAGA GIS keeps tool libraries and projects on Linux and Windows, and how to share tool chains.

Last updated

SAGA GIS organizes analysis as projects plus loadable tool libraries rather than one settings file. Grids travel as paired data files with shapes beside them. Projects reference those files by path, so folder layout matters more than hidden config.

Module libraries install to a default system folder that an environment variable can extend. That split confuses newcomers who hunt for an ini file that does not exist. Save projects explicitly and keep data beside them for portable moves across machines.

Where SAGA GIS stores this, by platform

Linux
/usr/lib/saga

Default module library folder on Linux installs. Extend it with the SAGA_TLB variable for extra tools. Projects and grids live in user chosen folders.

Windows
C:\Program Files\SAGA-GIS

Recommended install root with saga_cmd plus the tools submodule folder beside it. OSGeo4W builds instead live under apps saga. Projects and grids stay in user chosen folders.

Frequently asked questions

SAGA shows no extra tool libraries. Where do I put them?

Point the SAGA_TLB variable at the folder with your extra tool libraries and restart. The loader scans that path alongside the install default. Keep project files with the data they reference so chains rerun elsewhere.

How do I reuse a SAGA tool chain on another PC?

Save the session as a project file from the File menu and copy it with the referenced grids and shapes. There is no single settings ini to grab. Tool chains rerun from the project on any machine with the same modules installed.
