Where Is the supergfxctl Config File?

supergfxctl reads its GPU mode and VFIO options from /etc/supergfxd.conf on ASUS Linux laptops.

Last updated

supergfxctl centers on one JSON file: /etc/supergfxd.conf. It names the boot GPU mode plus VFIO passthrough flags, reboot behavior and timeouts. The daemon reads it at startup, so edits need a service restart to bite.

Most day to day switching never touches the file. The supergfxctl --mode command flips modes live, and only VFIO setup or a stubborn default mode sends you into the config by hand.

Where supergfxctl stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/supergfxd.conf

JSON with mode, vfio_enable, vfio_save, always_reboot and hotplug_type. Restart supergfxd after edits. Conflicts with optimus-manager and similar switchers, so run only one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the current GPU mode?

Run supergfxctl -g for the current mode and supergfxctl -s for supported ones. If the daemon reports Integrated on every boot, look for stray NVIDIA blocklists in /etc/modprobe.d first.

I edited the config but nothing changed. Now what?

Edit /etc/supergfxd.conf and restart the service (or run supergfxctl --reload where supported). A logout is enough when switching to or from Hybrid; Integrated and VFIO flips apply instantly.
