Where Does Synology DSM Store Shared Folders?

Synology DSM exposes shared folders under /volume1 (like /volume1/photo) with Btrfs snapshots in #snapshot, managed in Control Panel and Snapshot Replication.

Last updated

Synology presents shared folders in DSM, but on disk they hang under volume mounts like /volume1. The photo share from defaults is /volume1/photo. Admins create shares in Control Panel, and the panel handles permissions and services behind the scenes.

Snapshots are Btrfs based per shared folder through Snapshot Replication. Visible snapshots appear as #snapshot folders you can browse for older file versions. Restores run from the app rather than by copying files around by hand.

Linux
/volume1

Parent for shared folders on the first volume, with #snapshot data beside shares on Btrfs. Manage through Control Panel and Snapshot Replication. Direct SSH paths need admin rights.

Frequently asked questions

How do I snapshot a Synology shared folder?

Open Snapshot Replication, pick the shared folder, and take one on demand or schedule them with retention. Snapshots need a Btrfs volume. Browse versions in File Station when snapshot visibility is on, then restore or clone from the app.

Which volume holds my data?

Each storage pool mounts as /volume1, /volume2, and so on, with shares beneath. Check Storage Manager to see which pool holds your data. Multi volume systems split shares across these parents.
