Where Did Windows Subsystem for Android Store Data?

WSA kept Android state in a userdata VHDX under its package folder. Deprecated 2025 paths and backup warning.

Last updated

Windows Subsystem for Android is discontinued. Microsoft ended support in March 2025, pulled it from the Store, and ships no more updates. Installed copies may still launch, but every day on it is borrowed time.

While present, Android state lived in a virtual disk under the subsystem package folder. The file is userdata.vhdx (userdata.2.vhdx on some builds) inside LocalCache, with diagnostics logs under LocalState. Uninstalling deletes the package folder and the disk with it, so back up the VHDX first when anything inside still matters.

Where Windows Subsystem for Android stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\MicrosoftCorporationII.WindowsSubsystemForAndroid_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\userdata.vhdx

Android user data disk; some builds name it userdata.2.vhdx. Diagnostics under LocalState\diagnostics\logcat. Read-only program files sit under C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. Deprecated since March 2025: copy the VHDX before uninstalling.

Frequently asked questions

Is Windows Subsystem for Android still available?

No. Microsoft ended support in March 2025 and removed it from the Store with no further fixes. Existing installs may run but receive nothing. Migrate Android needs to native apps or other emulators promptly.

How do I back up WSA app data?

Copy userdata.vhdx from the package LocalCache folder with the subsystem shut down. That disk image holds the Android side whole. Reinstalls elsewhere cannot consume it directly, so treat it as an archive rather than a migration.

Where are WSA diagnostic logs?

Under the same package folder in LocalState\diagnostics, including logcat captures. Those help one last troubleshooting pass before removal. Program files under WindowsApps are read-only and hold no user data.
