Where Does YouTube Music Store Downloads?
YouTube Music keeps Premium downloads as encrypted cache in its private app folders on Android and iOS, playable only inside the app.
Last updated
YouTube Music downloads look like files and act like rentals. On Android they sit in the app's private storage as encrypted chunks plus an offline database, with a key in shared prefs binding them to that install. Copying them elsewhere produces unplayable fragments.
The practical folder for the curious is the app-external files music path, though it usually appears empty without root. iOS keeps the same model inside its sandbox with Library Downloads as the only door. Premium status plus a monthly license check decides what survives, not file management.
Where YouTube Music stores this, by platform
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.youtube.music/files/music
App-external music files for package com.google.android.apps.youtube.music, plus encrypted exocache and offline databases in the private sandbox needing root. SD card targets are user-chosen in Settings. Re-download after reinstalls instead of copying.
/var/mobile/Containers/Data/Application/<guid>/Documents
Sandboxed container with offline library reachable only through Library Downloads in the app. No Files.app path exists. Requires recent iOS with Premium for offline, and drafts of downloads vanish with reinstalls.
Frequently asked questions
How do I transfer YouTube Music downloads to a new phone?
You cannot. Downloads are encrypted .exo chunks tied to the app install and your Premium license, which rechecks every 30 days. The supported move is re-downloading on the new phone under Library Downloads after signing in, not copying files.
Will clearing YouTube Music data delete my downloads?
It wipes them. Clearing data deletes the encryption key and the offline database together, so everything must download again. Clearing cache alone is safer, though large libraries still re-verify against the server afterward.
Where is the YouTube Music desktop download folder?
There is none. Desktop listening runs through the music.youtube.com web app with browser-cached offline only. Library Downloads in the browser is the whole story on PC, with no portable folder to copy.
