Where Does ZBrush Save Projects and QuickSaves?
ZBrush saves .ZPR projects where you choose, with QuickSave and AutoSave copies in the public ZBrushData folder.
Last updated
ZBrush projects (.ZPR) go where File > Save points. They bundle tools, canvas, and timeline, so they grow large fast with undo history enabled. Save named versions often instead of relying on recovery. Incremental saves beat one overwrite file.
QuickSave and AutoSave are the safety net. They write numbered QSave files to the public ZBrushData tree, not your Documents. LightBox lists them under QuickSave. The count kept is set in Preferences then QuickSave then Max QuickSave Files, up to 100.
Where ZBrush stores this, by platform
C:\Users\Public\Documents\ZBrushData\QuickSave
AutoSave siblings sit in ZBrushData\AutoSave. Change the drive by editing ZBrushQuickSavePath.txt in the versioned ZBrushData folder. Manual .ZPR files live wherever you saved them.
/Users/Shared/ZBrushData/QuickSave
Older docs cite Users/Public/ZBrushData. Versioned folders like ZBrushData2024 change the exact parent. Get the full path in Terminal by dragging the target folder into the window.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a ZBrush QuickSave file?
Find it in LightBox under the QuickSave tab, or browse the QuickSave folder above and open the QSave numbered .ZPR directly. Copy it elsewhere first so the next QuickSave cycle does not rotate it away.
Can I move ZBrush scratch and QuickSave data off C drive?
Yes. Edit ZBrushQuickSavePath.txt to point at a roomy folder, or use a directory junction from the default ZBrushData path to the new drive. Keep ZBrush closed while changing it.
